Volunteers spark learning at CCCC’s Jonesboro Center

Volunteers provide a spark for learning to students in Central Carolina Community College's Adult Basic Education programs at the Jonesboro Center, in Sanford. They work one-on-one with students to help them grasp the concepts they need to gain their high school or GED diplomas. Volunteer John Altenburger, of Carolina Trace, helps student Alberto Rivera, of Sanford, with his math studies. Altenburger, a General Motors product engineer who retired in 1992, has tutored more than 1,000 students at the Center since he started 13 years ago.

Volunteer Bill Guwang, of Carolina Trace, assists student Irving Cejudo, of Sanford, with his math studies. Guwang, a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel, has been tutoring at the Center since 2006.
