The Sustainable Technologies Building under construction at Central Carolina Community College’s Chatham County Campus will have a green and growing roof, thanks to the Chatham County Board of Commissioners. At their Aug. 17 meeting, the commissioners unanimously approved the expenditure of $227,239 for the green roof, which will be covered with low-growing vegetation. They also approved $652,920 for an integrated water recycling system that will serve that building and the Chatham Community Library, also being built on the Chatham Campus. The new funding is in addition to the $8 million approved by the commissioners on July 20 for construction of both buildings. Both are designed to meet high energy efficiency standards set by the U.S. Green Building Council. The green roof will last about twice as long as a conventional roof. It will also improve storm water management and air quality, and preserve habitat and biodiversity. Both buildings are scheduled for completion in July 2010.
