Innovation Center boosts workforce training

Industry training directors and administrators from community colleges in eastern North Carolina have been coming to Central Carolina Community College's Industry Training Center at the Lee County Innovation Center to experience the simulated work environment (SWE) and other workforce training programs. They then share this information with industries they work with. Ellizon Torres (left), of Southern Lee High School, is congratulated by CCCC President Bud Marchant (second from right) on his May 2 induction into the Caterpillar Youth Apprenticeship Program in welding. Also congratulating Torres are Donnie Oldham (behind Torres), chair of the Lee Economic Development Committee; Dr. Andy Bryan, associate superintendent of Lee County Schools; and Martin Kegel, facility manager for Caterpillar-Sanford. Sixteen students from Lee County public high schools were inducted into the program, which trains them for a career as a welder. The students will learn their skills at the college campus, through the college's Industry Services Center at the Innovation Center in the Lee County Industrial Park, and at Caterpillar-Sanford. The ITC, which provides workforce training for industries in the college's service area of Chatham, Harnett and Lee counties, is located in the Lee County Innovation Center at the county's industrial park. Swindell has been involved in industry workforce training by the college since 1997 and has directed the Industry Services Center since 2007.
