From Chatham Habitat for Humanity
MONCURE, N.C.- Chatham Habitat for Humanity is proud to share the dedication of a new house in Moncure, which will be home to Barbara Thompson. The heartfelt ceremony took place on Wednesday, June 5th, 2024, marking a significant milestone in the journey of homeownership for Ms. Thompson. This home was built through a partnership between Chatham Habitat for Humanity and Central Carolina Community College.
Barbara Thompson, the soon-to-be homeowner, was joined by family, community leaders, volunteers, and well-wishers to celebrate the occasion. Constructed by students in Central Carolina Community College's Building Construction Technology Program and situated on a lot conveyed to Chatham Habitat by Chatham County, Barbara's new residence stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and community spirit.
The dedication was led by Andy McMahan, an instructor at Central Carolina Community College and a Board Member at Chatham Habitat for Humanity. During the ceremony, Dr. Mark Hall, Provost of Central Carolina Community College's Pittsboro Campus, presented Barbara with a symbol of faith and hope - a Bible - underscoring the importance of community and service.
Mr. Bryan Thompson, Assistant Chatham County Manager, handed Barbara the keys to her new home, signifying the fulfillment of a dream and the beginning of a new chapter in her life. Chatham County's commitment to affordable housing and partnership with Chatham Habitat for Humanity played a pivotal role in making this dream a reality.
In a poignant moment, Pastor Anissa Little from Mitchell Chapel AME Zion Church, and Barbara's cousin, offered a heartfelt prayer and a soulful song, invoking blessings and good fortune upon Barbara as she embarks on this new chapter of her life.
Barbara has long dreamed of owning her own home. From her work as a Certified Nurse Assistant and in housekeeping at UNC Hospitals, to driving a school bus, Barbara has spent her career in service of others. Since applying for a Habitat home in 2021, she has worked tirelessly to get to the finish line. When asked what she's looking forward to, she said, "I hope that one day I can give someone else a hand up."
When Barbara's home is complete, she will purchase it with a 30 year, 0% interest loan, the proceeds of which will be recycled back into Chatham Habitat and used to build more safe, healthy, affordable homes.
The dedication ceremony not only celebrated the completion of a new home but also exemplified the spirit of collaboration, service, and community empowerment that lies at the core of Chatham Habitat for Humanity's mission.
