SANFORD - Central Carolina Community College Cougars soared high Nov. 17 in a spectacular 81-68 win over UNC-Chapel Hill's Tar Heel JV team in the university's Smith Center.
The Cougars grabbed 41 rebounds, the hallmark of the team's outstanding defensive play.
Julian Bailey, out of Cape Fear High School, led the team with 15 rebounds and 10 points. Eleven of his rebounds were on the defensive end, hammering at the scoring output of the Tar Heels.
Josh Lee, out of Southern Lee, led all the scorers from both teams with 23 in the net. His ability to fly down the court resulted in several layups off of turnovers and steals. Josh's impressive acrobatic moves, as well as a long-range 3-point shot, stopped a Tar Heel rally.
Diamond Gibbs, out of Westover High, scored 12 points. His powerful plays at center solidified the defense and opened the court on offense. Gibbs has had two excellent games in row and is impressing coaches and fans with what he can do for the Cougar squad.
The Cougar's high-powered excellence in offense and defense was a team effort of all 14 players. Coach Doug Connor kept the team focused, reminding them that the Tar Heels would come back strong the second they eased up.
The Cougars have been playing the Tar Heel JV for 15 years, with just a few wins to show for their effort, so the win was very sweet. After the game, UNC JV Coach Hubert Davis said he was very impressed with the power of the Cougar play and with Connor's coaching.
The Cougars stayed for the UNC varsity game against Belmont Abbey, which did not end well for the Tar Heels either. The court was not kind to its home team that night, and the Cougars loved being a part of it.
The win against the Tar Heel JV team was the exciting finale for the Cougars during the Nov. 15-18 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region X Blast-Off Tournament. The Cougars also defeated Tidewater Community College, 88-72, and St. Andrews University JV, 88-58 in games at Wake Technical Community College.
