SANFORD, N.C. - Central Carolina Community College (CCCC) honored the achievements of its latest cohort of graduates during its 64th Commencement Exercises on Aug. 13 at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic & Conference Center. The ceremony, marked by a blend of celebration and reflection, highlighted the dedication and perseverance of the Class of 2024.

In her address, CCCC President Dr. Lisa M. Chapman encapsulated the day's essence, saying, "This is your day. This is your moment. And you need to enjoy it so that you can remember it with joy," said Dr. Chapman, who expressed immense pride in the graduates. "I want to thank you for how you have represented the Cougar Nation as students and how I know you will continue to represent us as alumni."

She invited the graduates to stand and find their loved ones in the audience, reinforcing the collective nature of their achievement.

"Our college prides itself on being a first-class opportunity and a leading workforce partner -- and we've endeavored to provide you with an exceptional education so you can become a part of the many opportunities that await you in our region here in North Carolina," Dr. Chapman told the graduates. "You've worked hard and we look forward to your next successful steps whatever they may be."

The summer graduation ceremony recognized 198 students, each representing the culmination of significant personal and academic growth. Vicky Wesner, honored as the 2023-2024 CCCC Faculty Member of the Year, served as Chief Marshal and Mace Bearer, symbolizing the academic tradition and excellence upheld by the institution.

The student speaker, Livia Rivera, who completed her Associate in Applied Science in Cosmetology, delivered a heartfelt and inspiring message. "This day is not only about recognizing the accomplishments of all the graduates who dedicated countless hours and worked diligently to get here," Rivera noted. "It was a long and often difficult journey to reach this goal." She extended her gratitude to the staff, families, and friends who supported the graduates, particularly singling out her mother for her inspiration and relentless support.

In a poignant moment, Rivera urged her fellow graduates to embrace their upcoming adventures with confidence and perseverance, noting, "Anything is possible if you work hard, stay consistent, and never give up on yourself. Congratulations Class of 2024!"

The ceremony also honored L.W. "Bobby" Powell with an Honorary Degree, a testament to his nearly 30 years of dedicated service to the CCCC Board of Trustees and the CCCC Foundation Board of Directors. Powell, who was first appointed to the board in 1992, has been a pillar of the college community, and his contributions have left a lasting impact. The Classroom and Fitness Center was named in honor of Powell and his wife Linda in 2021, recognizing their significant support for the institution.

Julian Philpott, Chair of the CCCC Board of Trustees, lauded Powell's exemplary leadership and commitment, remarking, "We honor Bobby because he is a champion of our community, a champion of education, a champion of Central Carolina Community College and its students. ... Bobby's leadership and contributions to Central Carolina Community College Board of Trustees have been exemplary."

Presenting the graduates was Dr. Kristi Short, Vice President/Chief Academic Officer.

Conferring of Diplomas was by Dr. Chapman and Mr. Philpott, who greeted each graduate as they eagerly walked across the stage as their name was called and their family and friends cheered them on.

The ceremony was further enriched by musical performances from a talented ensemble, including Ken Hoyle on violin, Karen Huey on viola, Lauren Winkens on clarinet, and a string duo of Alyson Cochrane and Elisabeth Crandall, with Carol Troutman on piano and Peter McArthur on pipes. The Rev. Eddie Hill of St. Luke United Methodist Church provided the invocation and benediction.

Special awards were presented by Dr. Jon Matthews, CCCC Provost - Harnett County, and academic award winners were recognized - Associate in Applied Science: Jennifer Belen Diaz Garcia, Steven Nicholas Davis, McKenna Alexis Shore, and Gracie Ann Ward; and Diploma Level: Cleta Savannah Bowman, Virginia Rose Hutchins, Mackenzie Mitchell, and Skylar Schwegman.

Also recognized were graduates who are members of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society.

Following the ceremony, graduates and their families gathered to commemorate the day with photographs, capturing the joy and pride of this significant milestone.
