SANFORD - Central Carolina Community College golf coach Jonathan Hockaday is looking for a good team this fall.
"I hope to build on some of our accomplishments from last season and do even bigger things this year. We brought in a great group of guys to compliment a talented returning class," said Hockaday, who is entering his fifth season as head coach and will be assisted by Jack Radley. "I think we have a really good shot to win the conference and go to nationals if we put in the work this season."
Among the top returnees is sophomore Chris Brown (Sanford, Lee County High School), who became the first CCCC golfer to be named to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division 3 All-American Team. He was the individual medalist of the NJCAA Division III Region 10 tournament and was named Region 10 Player of the Year.
Brown finished 16th among the 92 golfers in the NJCAA Division 3 National Championships, which was held June 6-9 at the Chautauqua Golf Club in Chautauqua, N.Y.
CCCC has three other sophomores and three freshmen on this year's team.
The other sophomores are Austin Machak (Raleigh, Millbrook High School), Tyler North (Sanford, Lee County High School), and David Smith (Siler City, Jordan-Matthews High School).
The three freshmen are Lucas Cannady (Sanford, Southern Lee High School), Jordan Caudle (Sanford, Southern Lee High School), and Noah Johnson (Sanford, Lee County High School).
The schedule:
Sept. 24 -- at Johnston CC Invitational (Cardinal Country Club, Selma); Oct. 1-2 -- Cougar Classic (Anderson Creek Golf Club); Oct. 14-15 - at Fayetteville Tech Invitational (Baywood Golf Club, Fayetteville); Nov. 4-6 -- at Fall Regional (Cross Creek Country Club, Mount Airy).
